Donor Story: Lori Cameron

Lori Cameron’s Saskatchewan roots run deep as does her connection to the University of Regina, even though she is no longer living on the prairies.

Cameron BA’81 has never forgotten from where she came, her University of Regina education or her determination to get her degree without a lot of debt. So much so that she has chosen to create, and ultimately endow through a planned gift, the Lori Cameron Scholarship in Geography and Environmental Studies. She feels that getting an education is “more competitive and more expensive now” and hopes to “… take away a layer of complexity for someone wanting to pursue their education in Geography and Environmental Studies. I remember how tough it is when you are young and self-supporting.”

Cameron intended to pursue a career in urban planning. She studied Geography at the University of Regina, earning a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction. Her career took a different path but that interest never waned.

“I think the field itself is very important. I love the geography department as it covers such a broad range of subjects,” explains Cameron, noting in particular how it has evolved to include a focus on environmental studies and sustainability. “It’s an area that really is looking at the future … that resonated for me. The work that is being done is absolutely remarkable, and this scholarship is meant to recognize and support students who demonstrate excellence in this field.”

“For me, the prairie focus is very important, because of my prairie roots. We tend to think of Saskatchewan as wide-open plains different from huge urban areas, but there are lots of concerns and considerations for the future of the province in terms of sustainability.”

Inspiration to create this award also came from a scholarship at the U of R in her father’s name, the Bill Cameron Award in Journalism. She says, “Seeing what a difference this award makes for a student each year, I was interested in doing the same thing. My father was a respected Saskatchewan journalist who believed in the power of education. I feel the same way.”

Cameron encourages others to consider giving in support of what’s important to them. “It’s actually very easy to do,” she says. “With the help of my professional advisor and the University of Regina Development staff, I was provided helpful information, suggestions and guidance for creating and

endowing a scholarship.”

“My Saskatchewan roots are very important to me,” says Cameron, “this scholarship will allow me to always have that strong connection to the University of Regina.”
